Programme Structure in Intercultural Studies 2007 - 2009

Intercultural Studies (ICS) is an interdisciplinary minor (25 ECTS credit units) which aims to introduce the students to intercultural issues arising from various contexts of research and practice. ICS offers a theoretical and practical framework to enhance students´ knowledge of and competence in intercultural issues.

Courses in ICS are open for all exchange students visiting the University of Jyväskylä. Application is required of all degree students of the University of Jyväskylä who wish to study Intercultural Studies as their minor subject (see more information about the application process).

The language of instruction in ICS-courses is English. All student assignment work is to be completed in English or in the language identified by the instructor.

Please notice that the maximum amount of credits for ICS is 25 ECTS and students are not encouraged to take more than 25 ECTS worth of courses, even though more credits are offered annually in the form of optional studies.

Intercultural Studies consists of the following study modules:

1) Introduction to Intercultural Communication, 5 cu

Objectives: To get oriented to the main theories and concepts of intercultural communication research and to acquire skills necessary in intercultural and multicultural encounters.
Mode of study: Web course (Introduction to Intercultural Communication, 5 cu).

2) Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Intercultural Studies, 8 cu

Objectives: To provide an understanding of the intercultural and/or cross-cultural research conducted within the chosen area.
Mode of study: Optional courses, for example: Cultural Anthropology (4 cu), Cross-cultural Psychology (4 cu), International Relations (4 cu), International Marketing (4 cu).

3) Context, Region, Heritage, 8 cu

Objectives: To gain thorough knowledge about a particular region, cultural heritage or tradition, intercultural or international organisation.
Mode of study: Optional courses, for example Asian studies (6 cu), Latin American studies (4 cu), Indian studies (2-4 cu), Russian studies (4 cu), Views to Finnish Culture (2-4 cu).

4) Interculturalism, Multiculturalism and Society, 4 cu

Objective: To explore a chosen area of multiculturalism and interculturalism in contemporary social life.
Mode of study:
Optional courses, for example Multicultural Counselling (4 cu), Race relations in historic perspective (4 cu).
