We are happy to announce that The 2nd Symposium of Language Policy in the Family, the Preschool and the School  will be held at the University of Jyväskylä in April 2017. The symposium is organised by the research project Language conceptions and practices in bilingual early childhood (Child2ling, 2013-2017) in collaboration with the Research Collegium for Language in Changing Society (RECLAS, 2016-2020).

Invited speakers of the symposium are:

Almost three years have passed since the summerschool Language Policy in the Family, the Preschool and the School - Theoretical and methodological directions (June 13-14, 2014) took place in Jyväskylä. The summerschool attracted around 20 PhD  students and Post Doc researchers from different parts of the world and was led by five Post Doc and senior researchers from Child2ling. The participants had common interests in family language policy and early childhood education policy issues; all with different perspectives and contexts. The current symposium is a follow-up of that event, but with a clear focus on the future.

The aim of this informal international two-day symposium  is to bring together junior and senior researchers to share research and to provide plenty of room for discussions on what the current theoretical and methodological trends in language policy research in early childhood are, and most importantly, where we should head. The symposium will run for two days and each day will have its own theme:

Friday April 7 (Day1 ): 2017 – How far have we reached? Talks by researchers from Child2ling, RECLAS and the previous summer school.

Saturday April 8 (Day 2): Which are the theories and methdologies for 2017 and beyond?  Talks by invited keynote speakers and open discussions with themes such as:

  • Do we need theoretical and conceptual re-considerations and re-orientations within the research field(s) of FLP and (pre)school language policy?
  • What type of (new) research questions should be (re)posed?
  • Which are the target groups we should focus on?
  • Do we need methodological paradigm shifts?

The program and schedule is found here.

We believe that the symposium will stimulate and encourage international research(er) collaborations, research networks and eventually result in joint research project applications.

The participation is free of charge. Note! The registration has now closed.

The symposium takes place in the university campus Mattilanniemi in the building Agora.
