Culture of the Ancient World 2009-2012




I. GENERAL INFORMATION

Culture of the Ancient World

Studies in Culture of the Ancient World are open to all students of the University.
Within the program of studies aiming at a Master's degree or at a Bachelor’s degree in the Faculty of Humanities they can be freely combined with any other subjects.

New students must fill in a registration form that is available on the notice board of the Classical Languages (Philologica building,  2nd floor).




CULTURE OF THE ANCIENT WORLD 30 ECTS cr.

Students may choose studies in the culture of the ancient world as a minor subject (30 ECTS cr.).
Students are not expected to have knowledge of classical languages, but courses in Latin and Greek may be included in the programme.

A smaller programme dealing with the culture of the ancient world may be formed of the sections of studies in culture of the ancient world. (20 ECTS cr.)



Aims

The students of the culture of the ancient world get acquainted with different fields of the culture of the ancient world. Students are not expected to have knowledge of classical languages, but courses in Latin and Greek may be included in the programme.

Optional fields ot the culture of the ancient world can support  student's  main subject studies.




Outline of studies

Most of the studies of Culture of the Ancient World  are normally completed by taking book exams.

Book exams may be taken on the scheduled examination days of the Faculty of Humanities. The student must register for them at least 7 days before the examination at the department.
 
The following book is recommended as a general aid in questions of Finnish terminology and name forms: MMM Antiikin sanakirja (edited in Finnish by M. Itkonen-Kaila) and Antiikin käsikirja (edited in Finnish by P. Castrén and L. Pietilä-Castrén).

CULTURE OF THE ANCIENT WORLD 20 ECTS cr.

Students may choose freely from the sections of studies (studies in Latin and Greek may also be included in the programme).The language of instruction is Finnish.

N.B.  If  the studies in culture of the ancient world are included in other subjects of the Master's degree, the students are expected to agree on the examination of the corresponding courses with the instructor

 

 

 

CULTURE OF THE ANCIENT WORLD
BASIC STUDIES, 30 ECTS cr.

No skills in classical languages are required, but language studies in Latin and/or Greek may also be included in optional studies.  Optional studies may be orienting to support and to complement the studies in major subject (to be agreed on with the instructor).
The aim of the study module is to give the students a general idea of the culture of the ancient world and its influence on the European cultural tradition.

Mode of study: Book exams or lecture series and final exams.

N.B. If  the studies in culture of the ancient world are included in other subjects of the Master's degree, the students are expected to agree on the examination of the corresponding courses with the instructor. Both studies in Latin and studies in culture of the ancient world must be agreed on with the instructor.

ANTP019  GREEK AND ROMAN LITERATURE 2,  (2 ECTS cr.)
A work dealing with the subject in depth or Greek and Roman Literature in translation (to be agreed on with the instructor).

 

ANCIENT WORLD II = Special fields  (10  ECTS cr.)
Getting familiar with art, architecture, philosophy and rhetoric of the ancient world as well as with the cultural transmission of the ancient world.

One of the following options:

Literature: CLARIDGE, Rome: An Oxford archaeological guide (the main points; to be agreed on with the instructor), or COARELLI, Roma (the main points; to be agreed on with the instructor),  STAMBAUGH, The ancient Roman city (chapters 1-14).
ANTP024 HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE IN ATHENS  2 ECTS cr.
Literature: CAMP, The Archaeology of Athens (chapters 1-7).

 ANTP030  RELIGION OF THE ANCIENT WORLD  2  ECTS cr.
MUSTAKALLIO, Uskonto ja yhteisö antiikin Roomassa, or  SCHEID, An introduction to Roman religion.
