Anu Karjalainen

My name is Anu Karjalainen and I’m a PhD student in applied linguistics at the University of Jyväskylä. I have an MA in Finnish (specialized on Finnish as second and foreign language). As minor subjects I have studied ethnology, literature, Swedish and educational studies.

My research interests lie in mobility, linguistic resources and identities from individuals' perspective. I've collected my data in Seattle among the Finnish immigrants and their descendants. I'm interested to find out how does the mobility from the heart-land of Finnish resources (Finland) to the periphery (Seattle) affect on individuals' voice and agency and what kinds of effects does this have on their identities.

My research is part of the Northern Multilingualism project. 2009-10 I’m a visiting researcher at the Humboldt University of Berlin (Institute for North Europe Studies).
