Christian Metal Online: Discursive Construction of Identity and Culture

In my dissertation I look at how the two seemingly contradictory worlds of metal music and Christianity are fused in Christian metal bands’ discourse practices to construct the identity of a Christian metalhead.

Combining sociolinguistic and discourse analytic approaches, my main focus of analysis is Christian metal song lyrics published in English on Finnish Christian metal bands’ homepages on the internet.

The religo-cultural context of the song lyrics situates them in a country that many consider the promised land of metal music; in a Western country where the tendency towards secularisation is gaining foothold at the expense of Christian traditions; and in a global village where translocal networking takes increasingly place online, giving birth to virtual communities around shared interests such as musical tastes, lifestyles and (religious) ideologies.

My data includes bands such as Venia
