English in business contexts

English in the working life

English is the most commonly used foreign language in Finnish business contexts. It is used as a lingua franca, i.e. non-native speakers of English use it as their shared language. English is used in various contexts, for example in email communication and negotiations.

As work is becoming more and more international, professionals in different fields need to operate in English without any help from language experts. We have investigated the linguistic and communicative realities of globalized business and work contexts.

We have studied, for example, where and how English is used in international companies, what functions and meanings English has in different work-related situations and what kinds of identities and relations are constructed in English.
