Research on multilingualism and youth languages

Youth language

It is an established fact that in youth language the influence of English is particularly clear. For some this has been a cause for moral panic: English as used by young people is seen as a threat to the integrity and autonomy of the Finnish language and culture. Yet there has been little research on the role of English in young people’s lives, and the functions and meanings it has for them.

To answer this call for research, we have investigated English as a meaningful linguistic and communicative resource that young people draw on in sophisticated ways to create social meaning.
