Multilingual practices in the media

Research on multilingual practices in the media

English has a strong presence in the Finnish media. It is often used in TV interviews and discussion programmes; on the radio and in the new media it often alternates or is mixed with Finnish. English also enters the everyday lives of Finns through such popular cultural practices as music, films and electronic games.

We have examined how institutional functions of the media are realized in English, and how English is used in mediated public discourse and in cultural production on the web. We are interested in both the more traditional media such as newspapers, magazines, radio and the newer media, for example, IRC, weblogs and discussion forums.
