The centers of media education in Russia implement a smooth transition from the predominantly theoretical training of future journalists to more practical approaches. It is obviously that the traditional summer practices at journalism faculties are not enough for a qualitative professional preparation with modern journalistic competencies relevant for media market. According to this, student media platforms based on journalism faculties play important role in the formation, refinement and improvement of the practical skills (writing articles, fact-checking etc.) of future journalists.

One of the main advantages of student media is the strong relationship between media production and learning process, that allows students to put theory into practice without discontinuing education. Related to project and team work practical competencies give an opportunity students to participate in all stages of production chain - from the application on the theme for a future material to its publication on media resources and further dissemination through social networks. This connection with educational process gives a motivation for students professional activity which can become one of the criteria for assessing his study at the faculty of journalism. Student media platforms work as centers for the practical training of students at the faculty – they are as important as disciplines as traditional theory plan.

Different kinds of media (newspaper, radio, television, Internet resources) give skills of a universal journalist who can create a convergence media content. Media platforms on the Faculty of Journalism of Lomonosov Moscow State University (“Journalist Online” (journalistonline.msu.ru), newspaper “Journalist”, TV-channel “Mokhovaya,9” and  radio “Mokhovaya, 9”) give a remarkable example of it.
