Ubique and Unique Book: The Presence and Potentialities of the Codex is an international symposium dedicated to exploring the contemporary status of the book (in literature and, more generally, in culture). The symposium is organized by the Academy of Finland research project The Literary in Life: Exploring the Boundaries between Literature and the Everyday (LILI) https://www.uta.fi/ltl/en/plural/projects/ongoing/LILI.html and by the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies (University of Jyvaskyla).

In spite of the predictions or even news about its death, the book is very much alive. Books and the logic of their use are present everywhere, in both print and electronic forms, in both analog and digital worlds. Hence our catch phrase “ubique book.” Digital technologies have also enabled or at least facilitated experimentation with typography and the book form. And many of these experiments, although seemingly inseparable from the print medium and unique-looking, have been turned into e-books (Phillips, A Humument; Danielewski, The Fifty Year Sword; Abrams & Dorst, S.). Could this suggest that the book format is matchless and exceptionally functional? Hence the attribute “unique” in our title.

The themes of the symposium presentations include:

  • possibilities of analog and digital experimentation
  • materiality/immateriality
  • multimodality, intermediality, transmediality
  • authorship (vis-à-vis writer/graphic designer)
  • the practices of reading p- and e-books
  • artists’ books and bookworks (or “bibliobjects”): unique books per se
  • book form in comic books and children’s literature
  • publishing and distribution
