Arts of belonging: cultural, material, and affective aspects of homing

Significant places have traditionally been captured in images and texts that encapsulate affective relations to them. Modern experience denies rigid categories such as nationality. Yet, people desire to belong. The concept of belonging is used in studying the temporary, shifting nature of attachments and the acts through which people seek to attach to places.

The focus of the interdisciplinary project is on materiality: in exploration of the concrete aspects of and the analysis of the artefacts used in the affective processes of belonging. How do individuals and groups attach to places? How are cultural artefacts used to strengthen the sense of belonging?

The sub-projects analyze literature, photographs, theatre plays, films, political documents and internet discussions in negotiating belonging and the expression of corporeal and affective nature of belonging through material instruments. What rhetorical and symbolic means are used in the processes of belonging and non-belonging?
