Programme Structure

The Master's Degree Programme in Music, Mind and Technology (MMT) requires two academic years of full-time study, and you are recommended to take the modules/courses in the order illustrated in the figure below. This ensures that the modules will be divided up evenly in all four academic terms. More detailed information on the content of each module/course is also provided below.

Core Courses

Music Psychology I-II (10 ECTS cr)
This course provides an overview of the key issues governing the psychological and social aspects of musical behaviour. The areas covered include musical talent and skill development, music and personality, music and movement, performance anxiety, music and emotion, music and consumer behaviour, and musical preferences. Examples of current research being undertaken in the department are incorporated where applicable.

Sound Processing I-II (10 ECTS cr)
This module will provide you with an understanding of basic theoretical issues related to music technology. The module also contains practical involvement with various types of music technology applications: MIDI, sequencer, notation, digital sound recording and editing, sound analysis, synthesis and manipulation.

Seminar (10 ECTS cr)
The aim of the seminar is to provide the students with the knowledge and skills necessary for preparing the master's thesis. Specific topics dealt with in the seminar include selection of the research topic, planning and scheduling of thesis work, preparation of the literature review, principles of academic writing, presentation skills, and thesis guidelines of the University. The seminar includes preparation of written reports and oral presentations.

Music Perception I-II (10 ECTS cr)
This module will provide you with an understanding of the key issues that govern the cognitive processes involved in music perception and production. These include the history, research areas, approaches, methods, and key findings of the field. The specific themes addressed comprise psychoacoustics, methodologies used in music perception research, perception of pitch and tonality, grouping, streaming and the perception of melody, perception of rhythm and metre, perception of timbre, and computational modelling

Music Processing (10 ECTS cr)
This module aims to familiarize you with advanced theoretical issues related to the analysis, manipulation, and synthesis of musical sound. You will become acquainted with the basics of algorithmic and interactive music systems as well as musical development environments. The module also includes practical work on advanced sound analysis, sound manipulation and sound synthesis, as well as development of interactive music systems.

Research Methods (10 ECTS cr)
This course will acquaint you with the relevant data collection and analysis methods for conducting empirical research in the field of music, mind, and technology. To acquire a working knowledge of relevant data collection and analysis methodologies, including experiment and survey design, and statistical analyses.

 

Specialization Topics (20 ECTS)

The programme includes optional modules (called Specialization Topics) worth 20 ECTS cr altogether; the extent of individual courses may vary. The courses can be selected from the following options or they can be replaced by applicable studies offered by the Department of Music, other Departments of the University of Jyväskylä or other (partner) universities. You will generally be required to take options that complement rather than repeat your previous training. Specialization topics vary from year to year.

The following are examples of courses offered by the MMT, as well as other departments within the University of Jyväskylä that can count towards the 20 credits required for Specialization Topics:

Music Information Retrieval (10 ECTS cr)
This module will provide you with an understanding of the key issues in cognitively oriented algorithmic music analysis. The module consists of key-finding models, rhythm and metre induction models, segmentation models, melodic similarity, content-based classification, and retrieval methods in music.

Music, culture, and cognition (10 ECTS cr)
This module will acquaint you with the key issues and methods of ethnomusicology and cultural music research. These include history, fieldwork strategies, ethnographical research, practices in ethnomusicological transcription, culture studies, gender studies and practical music making covering some of the world’s different music cultures.
MMT Colloquium (MMTS061, 3 ECTS per semester)

This course is intended for second-year students enrolled in the Music, Mind & Technology Masters program. Each student must give at least one 15-minute presentation per term outlining the current state of their thesis. Presentations will be followed by an informal group discussion on the presenter’s topic. Students are expected to provide critical oral feedback to the presenter. Students will take turns chairing each session. When applicable, the colloquium's timeslot may serve as a meeting time for group work, workshops, demonstrations and tutorials.

Neuroscience Tools (TILS810, 3 ECTS) This course includes a short introduction to basic metholodogy in electromagnetic brain imaging; experimental design, terminology and analysis. Examples of the use of Matlab and Python environments, as well as analysis packages for EEG/MEG data analysis (MNE, SPM/Fieldtrip, EEGlab), will be presented. Students will analyze real data using one of the tools, and present the results in a seminar.

Signal Processing (TIES324, 4 ECTS) This course consists of two phases. The first is devoted to the design of a digital filter and the usage of the software-MATLAB for the application in different disciplines, such as, biomedical signals, speech, music and so on. The second is focused on the study of event-related potentials (ERPs)--the special electrical brain signals through the basic and advanced signal processing techniques, including Fast Fourier Transformation based Filter, Spectral Analysis, Time-frequency Analysis, Principal Component Analysis, Independent Component Analysis, Non-negative Matrix/Tensor Factorization, and so on. This course requires some prerequisites.

 

Thesis (40 ECTS)

The thesis module trains the student to carry out research work as well as to write scientific reports. The thesis project consists of planning, executing and reporting a personal research project, supervised by a specifically assigned member of the course team. The thesis module also includes group supervision sessions. The thesis includes a review of the pertinent literature, a description of the aims and the methods used in the project, as well as a critical presentation and review of the results.
