Who can apply?

The programme is open to applicants from all over the world with Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, preferably majoring in one of the following fields: musicology, music education, music technology, acoustics, ethnomusicology, psychology, cognitive science, computer science, multimedia, information science, philosophy, mathematics and physics, or other relevant discipline. Since the field is interdisciplinary, applicants with background or interests in two or more of these areas are given advantage. The applicants are expected to possess a basic knowledge of music theory and acoustics.

Since the language of the programme is English, the selected candidates must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English. A minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 580 (paper-based) or 237 (computer-based) is required of applicants whose mother tongue is other than English. Also the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score is acceptable. The score should be 6.5 or above. For more information please visit the University Language Centre.

How do I apply?

You are requested to fill in an application form (downloadable pdf; Download free Adobe Reader) in which you describe your previous studies, command of English, interests in the programme and other reasons for applying. Application forms should be filled in, printed and sent by post to:

Based on the information given in applications, candidates will be selected for an interview. Copies of certificates and documents should not be attached to the applications but will be required if selected for an interview. The interviews will be held in Jyväskylä if possible, otherwise by phone.

Selected students will be notified of their acceptance by e-mail and a letter.
