Call for Papers: Symposium on Game Sound and Game Music

November 16th 2017

Who doesn’t remember the music of Super Mario or Pacman? Music and sound are an important element of game-play experience as well as an important part of game interfaces giving crucial information to the player. Some games are focused on music, or use sound as a tool of game interaction. One could even argue that other applications could learn from the way sound and music are used in games. Developing technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality also demand new approaches to sound design.

Despite their importance, audio elements of games have gained only fleeting attention within game studies. We are looking for new and innovative approaches to audio  in game research. What are the unexplored frontiers of game sound and game music that research should look into?

Symposium on Game Sound and Game Music explores these questions at the University of Jyväskylä. The event is organized by the Ludification and the Emergence of Playful Culture (LUDIC) research project funded by the Academy of Finland, and the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies.

We are looking for contributions related but not limited to the following themes:

  • Game soundscapes; Transmedial soundscapes
  • Historical aspects of game sound
  • Aesthetics of game sounds
  • Multimodal and crossmodal issues in games
  • Affective audio and music in games
  • Cognition of sound and music in games
  • Game sound design: tools, methods and theories
  • Game music composition: tools, methods and theories
  • Musical or sonic interaction in games; Embodied interaction with game sound and music
  • Audio issues in game interfaces (e.g. VR and AR games)
  • Music games and rhythm games; New musical interfaces in games
  • Audio and music technologies for games
  • Games and gamified applications for music education or music therapy
  • Music and audio in game cultures (e.g. game streaming)

We accept extended abstracts of up to 1000 words (including references). The language of the symposium is English. In addition to the abstract, please submit a 50 word bio. Please send them using this form.

The deadline for submissions is 11 August 2017.

Notification of acceptance/rejection 11 September 2017.

Symposium date is 16 November 2017.
