Couchsurfing is a website that matches travellers with local hosts.  It is free to use, and no money is exchanged for accommodation, although the accommodation may be quite basic (eg. sleeping on the couch/floor) and guests are usually expected to cater for themselves.  It functions on a review system, so bad guests will get poor reviews and may find it difficult to get hosted again in the future.  Couchsurfing can be a great experience, and provides an opportunity to share culture with some locals.  For more information, see the Couchsurfing website.

AirBnB is perhaps the better known and more professional cousin of Couchsurfing.  Hosts are paid for providing accommodation on AirBnB, so guests can have slightly higher expectations.  It's still not a regular hotel, as guests are staying in somebody's house, although sometimes the host wont be present while the guest is there.  It is similarly based on a review system, so guests are expected to be polite to their hosts (and vice versa), even though they are paying.  It is typically cheaper than many hotels, although prices vary greatly.  For more information, see the AirBnB website.
