Lecture: Reading for citizenship: A teacher education program

Fernanda Coelho Liberali

This lecture aims at discussing how to develop teacher education emphasizing reading from the perspective of citizenship development. Teacher education has been widely discussed; however, there is still a great difficulty in determining what kind of teacher education is being proposed and what aims and achievements have been conquered. This presentation discusses teacher education in a critical, monist-dialectical perceptive (Vygotsky and Bakhtin). In other words, it discusses how teacher education can promote critical understanding through the relationship between differing views in the construction of a unity which may result in transformation of unbearable conditions of living in different communities. The presentation will also deal with the concept of Teacher Support Teams (Daniels, 2004) and the notion of reading as citizenship development (Freire, 1970).
