Lecture 2: A policy and curriculum response: Critical literacy and the four resources

Allan Luke

The century-long ‘great debate’ over the optimal approach to print literacy has been complicated by the emergence of digital, multimediated cultures, and by the persistence of the inequitable reproduction of traditional literacies in industrial and postindustrial schooling. This talk will provide an outline of Australian approaches to teaching print literacy, the development and implementation of approaches to ‘critical literacy’, their theoretical bases and practical shapes, their international uptake and spread, and political backlash.
