Johanna Saario

Johanna Saario is a postgraduate student in the Finnish Graduate School of Language Studies LANGNET in CALS. Her dissertation deals with 9th grade pupils with an immigrant background as learners of social studies. The case study aims at finding out how teachers and pupils construct meanings in classroom interaction. Saario aims at describing, analysing and interpreting the spectrum of the textual world - written and spoken - and the (social and) literacy practices and events in the context of social study lessons. As the focus of her study is on the immigrant pupils, she examines what kind of a challenge it is for these pupils to learn social studies and to get socialised into the literacy practices of the subject in their second language.
