Finnish Language Education Policies

The national project on Finnish Language Education Policies (KIEPO) was carried out at the University of Jyväskylä in 2005–2007. The project aimed at examining the basics and goals of Finnish language education policies from the viewpoint of multilingualism and life-long learning. The project reviewed relevant societal changes and the development that had taken place in the target setting of language education internationally and specially within the European Union. Relevant attention was also paid to the requirements of working life.

The Project was funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education, and it was coordinated by the Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of Jyväskylä. The Project Team consisted of experts working in the area of language education and representatives of different interest groups.

As a result of the project, the team presented recommendations and suggestions for action to the Ministry of Education and other language education experts as to how language education in Finland should be developed to meet the arising needs today and in the future. Various types of material necessary for language education planning have also been prepared by the Project.
