The proposed project addresses the development of writing abilities in English as a foreign language and seeks to identify those features of language use and learning which can be shown to predict a learner's development or lack of it, and to better understand causes of strengths and weaknesses. The study is linked with a larger Finnish Academy funded DIALUKI project (2010-2013, www.jyu.fi/dialuki) that covers both reading and writing in both Finnish and English. The study is based on the writing tasks used in the Pearson Test of English General and compares the performances of Finnish 8th graders and second-year gymnasium (upper secondary school) students.
