Policy and Planning for Second Language Learning and Integration in Finnish Universities: Critical Perspectives on Integration Measures for Foreign Degree Students in English-medium Degree Programmes

Researcher: John Kaye

Supervisor: Taina Saarinen (PhD, docent)

This PhD research seeks to identify, examine and evaluate current practices in language policy and planning for the integration of foreign degree students in English-medium degree programmes of the Finnish higher education system. The research considers foreign degree students’ goals related to L2 learning (in this case, of Finnish or Swedish) as well as integration. The current state of affairs and ability of Finnish universities to sufficiently support these goals are key points in the research. The analysis also takes into account relevant issues of current practice in language policy, the role and position of English in society as well as other factors related to the comprehensive integration of foreigners in Finland.
