The politics of citizenship tests: rhetoric and temporality

The focus of my study (forthcoming in 2011) is on citizenship tests as a phenomenon of migration control system, but with a rhetorical emphasis: the point is to analyse the debates concerning the tests from the point of view of temporal figures. It is my aim to concentrate on the ways the national narratives are reconstructed and re-enforced in both the debates and the sets of questions themselves. The theoretical framework of the study revolves around the literature on time and temporality in politics. The case studied in more detail is the German state of Hessen and the local "test" it introduced in 2006. The primary sources are from Hessian Landtag as well as the public debates dealing with the matter.
