Research Leave 1 Sep 2012 - 31 May 2013
Research period system

I am on a research leave funded by the University of Jyväskylä for the academic year 2012-2013. My plan is to write a monograph on mutual recognition and to finish some other articles and edited collections.

I received my PhD from the University of Jyväskylä in 2003, and an MA from the University of Canterbury at Kent in 1996. In addition, I have worked as Research Fellow at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, and as a visiting scholar at Oxford University, University of Reading, Münster and Columbia University, NY. Briefer visits of a couple of weeks I’ve made to Oxford Brookes, Macquarie University and (in April-May 2012) University of New South Wales. My interests in philosophy include ethics, practical reason, political philosophy, social ontology and philosophical anthropology, and I’ve co-edited a number of books on these topics (Hegel on Action; Recognition and Social Ontology; Solidaarisuus; Dimensions of Personhood). I am currently working on a number of articles on social ontology; climate ethics; and a manuscript on theories of mutual recognition; my previous monograph was on Charles Taylor’s philosophy.

Projects I participate:

  • The Social Ontology of Personhood: A Recognition-Theoretical Approach, Heikki Ikäheimo, Australian Research Council, University of New South Wales;
  • One for all and all for one: Modelling cooperation and solidarity, Raimo Tuomela, Academy of Finland, University of Helsinki;
  • The Center of Excellence in the Philosophy of the Social Sciences, Uskali Mäki, Academy of Finland, University of Helsinki.
  • Pathologies of Recognition, Jussi Kotkavirta, University of Jyväskylä.
