Biography

Ilkka Kauppinen is a Docent (especially Economic Sociology) and a Senior Lecturer (Unit of Sociology) at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy at the University of Jyvaskyla. He graduated from the University of Jyvaskyla in 1999 and received his PhD degree in Sociology from the University of Jyvaskyla in 2008. In 2010-2011 he was a Visiting Fulbright PhD-researcher at the Institute of Higher Education, University of Georgia (USA). Currently he is Institute of Higher Education Fellow.

Areas of Interest

During the last five years he has focused on topics such as social theory, globalization, transnational capitalist class, transnational interlocks between universities and corporations, academic capitalism and social mechanism based explanations. Overall, he is interested in theorizing and explaining the emergence of transnational higher education and transnationalization of knowledge production networks especially from the point of view of a theory of academic capitalism and global capitalism school. To this end, he is currently preparing a monograph Transnational Academic Capitalism.

The Relevance and Benefits of my Research

Tutkimukseni osallistuu yhteiskuntatieteiden metodologian uudistamiseen sosiaalisista mekanismisteista käytävän keskustelun välityksellä. Lisäksi tutkimukseni tuottaa jäsentynyttä ymmarrystä korkeakoulutukseen ja tieteeseen kytkeytyvistä yhteiskunnallisista muutosprosesseista ja niiden sidoksista globaali talouteen.

Recent Publications

His recent publications include edited volumes Academic Capitalism in the Age of Globalization with Brendan Cantwell and 1900-luvun ranskalainen yhteiskunteoria (in English: 20th Century French Social Theory) with Miikka Pyykkonen. His recent articles include Towards a Theory of Transnational Academic Capitalism (British Journal of Sociology of Education) and Different Meanings of 'Knowledge as Commodity' in the Context of Higher Education (Critical Sociology).
