The topic of my PhD research is the phenomenon of expertise by experience (suom. kokemusasiantuntijuus) in the Finnish social welfare sector. I examine the phenomenon as a technology of governance aimed at creating a certain form of subjectivity and, at the end, citizenship. The main questions arising from this relatively recent construction are, what are the main characteristics of the subjectivity created through the processes of expertise by experience, what technologies of governance can be interpreted in the processes, and how do the experts by experience themselves perceive their status and possibilities for action. In addition, the very notion of expertise by experience is intriguing: what kind of knowledge is allegedly gained through experience and how does it differ from other forms of knowledge or expertise.

Currently I am conducting my research as part of the project  "Superdemocracy". A Critical Assessment of the Participative Turn.

The relevance and benefits of my research

My research contributes to better understanding of participatory policy initiatives. Particularly, it helps the makers and practitioners of social policy to identify the often implicit assumptions of the initiatives’ goals and operating principles, and is thus useful in evaluating their effects and enhancing their democratic potential.
