Biography

I was nominated as a full professor of social work at the University of Jyväskylä in 2014. During 1995-2007 I worked in various teaching and research positions in the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy and 2011-2014 as a postdoctoral researcher (Academy of Finland) in Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius at the University of Jyväskylä. During 2007-2011 I led a few development and research projects in the Centre of Excellence on Social Welfare in Central Finland and in JAMK University of Applied Sciences. I received my PhD from the University of Jyväskylä in 2004 and it is titled “The eco-social approach in social work and the challenges to the expertise of social work”. Online: https://jyx.jyu.fi/dspace/handle/123456789/13326.

Research Areas

My research is focused on ecosocial work and ecosocial transition in social work. I am also interested in user involvement and user participation, community social work, structural social work and action research. Recently, I have been involved in three research projects funded by the Academy of Finland: The role of welfare services in participative citizenship of marginalised citizens, 2011-2014 (PALKO), Contribution of social work and systems of income security to the ecosocial transformation of society, 2015-2019 (ECOSOS) and Inclusive Promotion of Health and Wellbeing (PROMEQ), 2016-2019.

Relevance and Benefits of Research

By researching the ecosocial transition in societies and the role of social work in that transition, it is possible to increase knowledge about the mechanisms, barriers and possibilities concerning the transitions in society and in welfare service systems. Researching and developing the sustainability of welfare services opens various possibilities for social work practitioners to work with their service users together in supporting their sustainable wellbeing.
