I received my Ph.D. from the University of Helsinki in 1997. Before my appointment as the Professor of Political Thought at the University of Jyväskylä in 2010, I worked as a Research Fellow at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies.

I have published seven books and 80 articles. My research areas include continental political theory, history of political thought, conceptual history, biopolitics, and political theology. I have a long-term interest in Carl Schmitt’s political thought, but my publications also include articles on such late modern continental authors as Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben and Hannah Arendt.

As a political theorist, I have aimed at developing a theory of non-exclusive political community. My most recently published books are titled The Voice of Conscience: A Political Genealogy of Western Ethical Experience (Bloomsbury 2013) and On the Greek Origins of Biopolitics: A Reinterpretation of the History of Biopower (Routledge 2016).
