Applying for the department’s financial support for internship in 2018

Availability of financial support

The Department's Financial Support for Internship will be awarded to forty (40) students who meet the prerequisites and who will complete their internship by the end of the year 2018 as follows:

  • In November 2017, twenty-five (25) students will be given financial support for internship during 2018.
  • In April 2018, fifteen (15 + possible returned internship supports from the first round) students will be given financial support for internship during 2018.

The department's internship support grant in 2018:

  • 1200 €/ 2 months (total length of the internship)
  • 1800 €/ 3 months or longer

If there is no collective agreement in the field in question, your monthly salary must be at least the minimum wage determined by Kela (1187 euros/month in 2017 - Kela has not confirmed the sum for 2018, yet).

Application prerequisites/conditions

Eligible applicant

  • must be a degree major with the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy (majoring in philosophy, social work, sociology, political science or social and public policy) and complete his/her degree at the Department
    • NB! Students who study in the master's degree programmes but are major students of other faculties or departments should apply for financial internship support given by their home department or other funding options
  • must hold a Bachelor's Degree (registered by the end of the application round)
  • must have completed the Master's Thesis Seminar I in their advanced studies (ECTS cr points registered by the end of the application round)
  • has no prior internship as a part of their studies
  • must have registered as a degree student of the University of Jyväskylä (JyU)

It is the responsibility of a student to ensure that all required studies are registered before applying.

Conditions for the internship

  • the internship will be part of studies and the student will be awarded ECTS for the internship
  • the internship meets the requirements set for the internship
  • the internship placement is in Finland, at a Finnish diplomatic mission abroad or at a Finnish company/organization abroad
  • the internship must be completed during the year 2018 (1 Jan–31 Dec, 2018)

Other considerations

  • the student who receives the support needs to be registered for attendance at the University of Jyväskylä for the period of the internship

How to apply

Freeform applications must be delivered to education coordinator Kristiina Ruokoja by email to kristiina.ruokoja [a] jyu.fi latest on 28th of November 2017 at 12:00 noon.

The following information must be included in the application:

  • Name and contact information (including email)
  • Major subject and master's programme
  • Reasons why you should receive an Internship Support Grant:
    • If you cannot name an organization yet, describe what kind of job/tasks you are going to seek for. How would the internship in question support the development of your expertise/know-how and your career plans?
    • If you already have a confirmed internship position, include that information in your application with your motivation letter: Letter of Intention signed by the employer for conditional acceptance for the internship at the organization
      • the letter of intention should be emailed by the employer to Kristiina Ruokoja by the application deadline

Please note that you cannot make any changes to the application once you have submitted it.

How decisions on the support are made

The applications that have arrived within the given deadline will screened. Besides the prerequisites, applicants are ranked by the following criteria:

  • Motivation
  • Total number of credits completed for the degree and study success
  • Confirmed internship positions will be taken into account (Enclosure: Letter of Intention signed by the employer for conditional acceptance for the internship at the organization).

The selection process will be completed in week 48. Applicants will be informed of the decisions by email (be sure to include your email address in application!)

Please note that according to the University Act (558/2009, Section 84 /1) the decisions on grants may not be appealed.

Student must inform the department's contact person Kristiina Ruokoja about their confirmed internship position within four (4) months after being awarded department's financial internship support. Otherwise, the awarded support will return back to the department.
