Dr. Jonas Zaddach (Talos Security, Cisco) will give a guest lecture on Analysis of malicious embedded software on Tuesday, 5 September at 10:00-11:00 in Ag Alfa. Welcome!

Abstract:
Malware has plagued connected systems for a long time, and it looks like embedded systems are no exception to that. Embedded systems malware is on the rise, but defense strategies from the PC and server world don't work out of the box and need to be adapted. In this talk, I will present the malware analysis process of a typical Anti-Virus vendor nowadays, and discuss how these strategies can be adapted and enhanced to work on embedded systems. The talk will touch static analysis of firmware binaries, as well as dynamic analysis of firmware in an emulated environment, and highlight the challenges and issues specific to embedded software.
