Postgraduate degrees

The postgraduate degrees awarded by the Faculty of Information Technology are:

  • Licentiate of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematical Information Technology, Computer Science or Cognitive Science

  • Licentiate of Science (Economics and Business Administration) and Doctor of Science (Economics and Business Administration) in Information Systems Science

A person who has completed their Master's degree either in Finland or abroad is eligible to apply for Doctoral level studies at the Faculty. The normal duration of PhD studies is  from four to five years.

An applicant who has a Master's degree in a related field (major subject in e.g. mathematics, business administration, psychology) can also be accepted as a PhD student if their earlier studies, interests, and work experience support the studies at the Faculty of Information Technology. In this case, students must complement their studies with Mathematical Information Technology or Computer Science courses so that their studies include a total of 100 ECTS credits of university studies in the appropriate field.

The emphasis of the degree is on research, i.e. on doctoral thesis or the licentiate's dissertation. In addition, students are required to complete a minimum of 60 ECTS course credits. They may include advanced level studies of the major subject and possible subject/ advanced studies of a chosen minor subject in support of the major subject content and the research work.
