How to apply

Application deadlines twice a year, March 31 and August 31 (or last working day of the month)

Check Your Eligibility to Apply

  • You need to have a master's degree with sufficient studies in the subjects of the Faculty or in subjects closely related to them. It's possible to get conditional admission decision up to six months before graduation. Therefore, you may be able to apply even if you haven't completed your master's degree before the application deadline.
       
  • Fluency in English is required. Applicants must be able to provide evidence on their English language profi­cien­cy in a recognized international language test with following minimum scores: TOEFL 627 (Paper Based Test) / 95 (Internet Based Test), IELTS 7, or CPE and CAE levels B or C, or PTE (Pearson Test of English) 76. The language test is not needed if master's degree (including master's thesis) is done in English in EU/EEA area, Switzerland, United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

If master's degree is from different discipline, additional 20 ECTS coursework is required. These additional studies are individually planned with supervisor and they are most typically master's level studies in the planned research field.

Application Process

The doctoral studies are done in one of the following research fields:

  • Information Systems (Ph.D. or D.Sc.)
  • Software and Communications Engineering  (Ph.D.)
  • Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences (Ph.D.)
  • Learning and Cognitive Science (Ph.D.)
  1. Contact directly potential supervisors in your planned research field. You need to have two supervisors before submitting the actual application. The supervisor-in-charge must have an employment relationship with the Faculty of Information Technology, a doctoral degree and sufficient academic merits.

  2. Prepare a study plan for the coursework (see information about coursework) and a research (see suggested content for a research plan) with assistance of your supervior(s). Attach the plans, degree diploma, transcript and other relevant documents in your application.

  3. Send your application by the deadline (March 31, August 31, or last working day of the month)Application form will be in Studyinfo.fi. The applications are first evaluated in the research fields and then discussed in the board the doctoral school (see organization). Finally, admission decisions are made by the Head of the Doctoral School. Decisions are usually made within a month after the application deadline.

  4. You will get decision letter by an email. You need to confirm your studentship by registering for the doctoral studies in Studyinfo.fi.
