Application deadlines March 31 and September 30

1. Check that you are eligible to apply

  • You need to have a master's degree with sufficient studies in the subjects of the Faculty or in subjects closely related to them. A degree in a related major subject (e.g. mathematics, business administration, psychology) may be accepted if your earlier studies, interests, and work experience support the studies at the Faculty.
  • Fluency in Finnish, Swedish, or English is required. Applicants without Finnish or Swedish language skills must be able to provide evidence on their English language proficiency. A minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 580 (paper-based) or 92 (internet-based) is required of applicants whose mother tongue is other than English. Also the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score is acceptable. The score required is 6.5 or above.

2. Find supervisors for your postgraduate studies

Before the actual application process, you must find supervisors for your doctoral studies. Each graduate student must have at least two committed and qualified supervisors and at least one of them must be from the student's own department in the University of Jyväskylä. The supervisors must have at least a doctorate in the field, or be a docent or professor of the subject.

If you do not know a person who could act as your supervisor, please familiarise yourself with the research conducted at the departments and locate the research team with research interests closest to your own. This information can be found on the department websites:

The first step is to send a preliminary research plan and your CV to the potential supervisor. The actual research plan should follow the relevant guidance: research plan. After receiving agreement from the supervisors, you can start preparing your application.

3. Prepare your application

Your application must include:

  • Language test results (if needed)

  • a copy of the master's degree certificate and the transcript of records (if the degree is not from the University of Jyväskylä)

The study plan and the research plan must be accepted by your supervisor.

4. Send your application

Finally, the application (including attachments) is to be sent electronically by the deadline (30 September or 31 March) using the following form: https://www.jyu.fi/it/jatko-opiskelijalle/form
