Communication and Language Studies

Communication and language studies are an integral part of all our degree programmes.

Language Studies of the International Master's Programmes

Students of the international Master's programmes are required to complete two mandatory language and communication courses, one in Finnish and one in English, 10 ECTS in total, as per below. As the only mandatory English course is integrated with the Thesis Seminar and is thus scheduled towards the end of the studies, students may wish to take some other English language courses delivered by the Language Centre to be included in their other optional studies. For more information on the English language courses available at the Language Centre, please see below. Detailed course descriptions and schedules are available on Korppi.

Non-native Finnish speakers must choose one Finnish course depending on their level of Finnish skills. Native Finnish speakers choose any optional language and communication studies (a minimum of 5 ECTS) offered by the Language Centre.

English

  • XENX009 Integrated Research Communication (5 ECTS): the course is mandatory and is integrated with the Master’s Thesis Seminar providing tailored support for the thesis writing process, from the establishment of research focus to synthesising, writing and presenting a research plan. The focus is on information management and evaluation, critical reading, conventions of research reporting, and academic writing in the disciplines, seminar and presentation skills, and academic skills for learning through English. Please choose your own group in Korppi when signing up.

Finnish

  • XSU0005 Finnish 1 (5 ECTS): the course focuses on everyday language skills and use, but also on analysis of the language structure. After the course students can progress to Finnish 2 –course.

If a student has studied Finnish before admission to the programme, the student can choose one of the following instead of XSU0005:

    • XSU0006 Suomi 2 (5 ECTS)
    • XSU0007 Suomi 3 (6 ECTS)
    • XSU0008 Suomi 4 (6 ECTS)
    • XSU0021 Suomi 5 (6 ECTS)

Non-native Finnish speakers must choose one Finnish course depending on their level of Finnish skills. The basic starter level course (Finnish 1) is the default mandatory course. If a student has studied Finnish before admission to the programme, the skills level is assessed and the student can choose another course according to their skills level. Students can also continue to study these subsequent courses as their other optional studies after Finnish 1. Native Finnish speakers choose any optional language and communication studies (a minimum of 5 ECTS) offered by the Language Centre.
