The Doctoral SchooI in the Faculty of Information Technology offers doctoral education in information systems, computer science, cognitive science and mathematical information technology. The doctoral school regularly provides funding for doctoral students. In the Autumn 2017, call for funding applications is open till September 30.

Doctoral Student must have a Master’s degree and permission for doctoral studies in the Faculty of Information Technology. Beginners may apply for doctoral studies at the same time, but there is a separate application procedure for it. See more information in:

Doctoral student positions

There are 4-6 Doctoral Student fixed-term positions open beginning January 1st 2018 or as agreed. The selected Doctoral Student will work in different research fields in the Faculty of Information Technology.

The tasks of a Doctoral Student focus on research concerning doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks and other tasks connected to these tasks. Members of the teaching and research personnel in the University of Jyväskylä are obliged, within their respective job descriptions and work plan, to conduct and supervise  scientific research, follow the development in their respective disciplines, examine theses and dissertations, teach and enhance teaching practices, participate in the development of teaching, provide study counselling, carry out relevant examinations, participate to student selection as well as attend to task derived from membership in the University’s administrative bodies and to other tasks counted as part of their work or assigned to them. In addition, they are to provide the necessary accounts concerning teaching, counselling and supervision, publications and scientific activities, as well as the examinations they have arranged.

Doctoral students job-specific salary component is based on the job demands level 1-4 according to the salary system concerning teaching and research personnel at universities (1.808,42 €/month – 2.475,31 €/month). In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid. Appointee is subject to a four-month trial period.


In addition to the open doctoral student positions, the decision board may admit grants in the same application process. These grants are mainly for the students in the beginning of their doctoral studies. Amount of the grant is 1700 €/month, which is tax free income up to 20.309,40 €/year (2017). However, a pension insurance is usually compulsory for grantees. See more information in
