The main research areas of the Department of Mathematical Information Technology are scientific computing and optimization, mobile systems, software engineering as well as teachers education in computer science. The department has many ongoing research projects funded e.g. by the Academy of Finland, Tekes - The Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, and other outside funding sources. Especially, research on scientific computing and optimization is at high level and internationally recognized.

Specific research areas of the department include, for example, mathematical modelling, numerical methods, model-based optimization and multiple criteria decision making, signal and image processign, data mining and neural computing, programming languages, e-learning and virtual learning environments in teaching, mobile P2P networks, and quality of service in mobile and fixed broadband networks.

In 2011, the department's research strategy was updated: Research strategy 2011-2017.
