Software installations on JYUNET workstations

About software installations and updates on Windows workstations of JYUNET

General

JYUNET workstations adhere to a strict security policy. This means that users can't install anything on JYUNET computers. All installations and updates are made by JYUNET administrators.

Because of the large number of workstations on JYUNET software installations and updates are mainly done centrally by automatically deploying the installations to the target workstations. Manual installations to a single computer from CDs or other installation media are only done on special cases. All installation requests must be made well in advance.

If you need a new piece of software please inform your local computer support at least two weeks in advance. When requesting multiple installations the request should be made more than two weeks in advance. Please note that not all software can be installed on JYUNET computers due to compatibility problems. Only software essential to ones work will be installed.

Automatic Software Deployment

In JYUNET there are two methods for automatic software deployment in use. Majority of the installations and updates are being applied when a computer is restarted in university's wired network. It is very important to log off from your computer when you leave work so that the computers can be restarted automatically during night time and installations can take place outside work hours.

Some of the installations and updates can be done in the background while the workstation is in use. The installations can also be done outside university's network e.g. in home. All updates and installations are done at night so that they don't interfere with normal work. Please note that if you are using a mobile internet with your JYUNET laptop software deployment can cause significant data usage.

Automatic software installations and updates, visibility to users

IT Services has developed a system which informs the users if one or more of the running programs interferes with the installations. The system also notifies the users of when the installation begins and when it is complete.

Installations from the user's perspective:

1. When the installation is about to begin a notification is shown on the system tray (usually on the lower right corner). The notification shows the time until the installation begins.

If you want to start the installation immediately you can click on the notification and then click "Run".

Otherwise the installation will begin when the counter reaches zero.

 

2. If one or more of the running programs interfere with the installation a notification is shown. Installation will not continue until the programs listed in the notification are closed. If you want to postpone the installation 10 minutes, click "Remind me later". Note that most of the installations are critical security updates and should not be postponed very long. Installation will continue after you have closed all the interfering programs or logged off.

3. When there are no interfering programs running the installation will begin. A notification is shown over the system tray. During the installation the programs listed in the notification are not to be started or the installation may fail. You can hide the notification by clicking "Hide"

4. When the installation is completed a notification is shown over the system tray. The notification will close automatically in 10 seconds. Now you can continue to use your workstation normally.
