Doctoral School

JSBE Doctoral Programme in Business Studies

University of Jyväskylä School of Business and Economics (JSBE) offers the degree of Doctor of Science (Economics and Business Administration) for promising students in business studies and economics. The doctoral degree is possible to complete in six major disciplines: accounting, corporate communication, corporate environmental management, management and leadership, marketing, and strategy and entrepreneurship. Here we provide a short description of JSBE Doctoral Programme for business students. A description targeted at doctoral students in economics is provided in another document.

Short Study Guide

Business disciplines at the JSBE are members of the KATAJA (Finnish doctoral program in business studies). The KATAJA organizes doctoral-level courses at the Finnish academic institutions. Some of the courses are held in Jyväskylä. The KATAJA tutorials and workshops are freely available for doctoral students of the JSBE.

In Jyväskylä, doctoral-level course work is organized by the doctoral school of the JSBE and Methodology Centre for Human Sciences (IHME). Some courses are given in Finnish and some in English. JSBE’s doctoral school organizes courses and research seminars, and it tutors academic work in cooperation with the relevant professors. For example, doctoral school gives courses in research methods as well as academic writing and publishing. In addition, in JSBE seminar prominent researchers in economics are invited to give talks about their recent work and developments in their field of study. The IHME offers e.g. training and events on research methodology and philosophy of science across faculty boundaries.

In addition to course work and seminars, written (usually article-based) thesis is required for the doctoral degree in business. See also the document “Examination of a doctoral dissertation” and the more extensive doctoral study guidelines for doctoral students at the JSBE.

JSBE doctoral school is a part of University of Jyväskylä Graduate School for Doctoral Studies. Please see also their instructions for doctoral studies.

It is possible to study full time and part time in the doctoral programme. Regardless whether the student is studying full or part time, requirements for the doctoral dissertation and course work are same in both cases.

Requirements for Applying

Admitted students are assumed to have a strong background. Namely, Master’s degree one of the business disciplines is required or equivalent knowledge.

The selection process of doctoral students focuses on the appropriateness of the proposed research subject area, success in previous studies, the ability to conduct research, and the school’s supervisory resources for research conducted in the subject area. Thus, admitted students should show interest in the research areas at the JSBE focuses on; see below.

Applying for the JSBE Doctoral Programme

The application procedure is same for business and economics students. Please see our website for a formal application procedure.

Funding, Fees & Living Costs

Admission to the JSBE Doctoral Programme does not guarantee funding. That is, scholarships are not linked to an acceptance of doctoral school application. However, together with the doctoral students, the JSBE faculty is seeking full-time funding for its doctoral students. The funding channels for the doctoral students include JSBE doctoral student grants, Foundation for Economic Education (Liikesivistysrahasto), Kauppalaisseuran säätiö, KATAJA, TEKES and Academy of Finland; see also link to funding channels.

Doctoral students do not have to pay tuition fees in Finland. However, they do not get undergraduate students' discounts either (except for some 18% discount from university food). More information on living costs are available here. For example, normal price for university food is 5.60 euro. Note that trains are quite expensive in Finland (e.g. Jyväskylä - Helsinki around 55 euro), but you can get the tickets cheaper if you buy them at least one week in advance.

In the first registration, new doctoral students may have to pay a small registration fee (~35 euro), if you are not already (active) in the University of Jyväskylä register.

Business Research at the JSBE

Research at the JSBE is organized in disciplines and research groups. The research groups overlap discipline boundaries. Of these groups, research conducted on responsibility and sustainability have been particularly pronounced and recognized.
