Aims

The purpose of this JSBE doctoral school course is to:

  • enhance the methodological understanding of postgraduate students (breadth and depth),
  • enhance the academic writing skills and, more widely, the quality of doctoral dissertations,
  • present current high-quality business and economics research to postgraduate students, and
  • introduce variety of research traditions in business and economics to postgraduate students at the University of Jyväskylä.

Completing the course

Completing the course will require attendance to at least five JSBE research seminars. The seminars that a student attends do not have to take place during a same academic year. JSBE seminar is organized twice a month: one in business and one in economics. However, please note that not all of the JSBE seminars are held in English. For information on the JSBE seminar is available at:

https://www.jyu.fi/jsbe/en/research/jsbe-seminar/

The doctoral student writes a learning diary about the JSBE seminars that (s)he attended. In the diary following topics are discussed in reflective manner:

  • research methods – the role of theory and empirics
  • academic writing and argumentation, and
  • how can I utilize the learned information in my own dissertation?

Student has to use written material of the presenters in the learning diary (e.g. his/her article on which the presentation was based on).

Once you have written a learning diary of the five JSBE seminars, please return it by email to the coordinator of JSBE doctoral school (doctoral-studies-jsbe [ät] jyu.fi) and your supervisor. The diary has to be returned as a single pdf-file. Recommended length of the diary is 10 pages (times new roman, line spacing 1.5).

Coordinator of the JSBE doctoral school approves or rejects the learning diary. In the later case he also gives some guidelines for improvement. After completing the course the doctoral student discusses with her/his supervisor-in-charge about the research ideas generated by the course.

The course is also open for doctoral students from other faculties of University of Jyväskylä.
