Doctoral School

Career guidance at the JSBE doctoral programme

University of Jyväskylä School of Business and Economics (JSBE) offers career guidance for its doctoral students as follows:

Through supervision and follow-up groups:

  • The supervisors and follow-up group of the doctoral student play the most important role in the career guidance during the studies. The follow-up group meets the doctoral student at least once a year. The group promotes and monitors the progress of doctoral studies and dissertation work, as well as supports the student’s career planning during the doctoral studies.

Through course work:

  • TTKJ161 Introduction to doctoral studies -course is typically taken at the beginning of the doctoral studies and it gives a practical guidance to the doctoral studies. Besides introducing faculty members, available doctoral courses and more generally the research environment at the University of Jyväskylä, the course provides guidance for revising and updating personal doctoral study plan (if needed), advices students on finding suitable funding channels and provides general information on careers of PhDs.
  • TTKJ157 Work and career in business school -course prepares students for international academic careers in the global field of business studies and economics. The topics covered relate to scholarly research, discussion, debate, and manuscript submission. This course is rigorous, relevant, and practical, and it has the goal of enhancing participants’ academic careers.
  • It is complemented by TTKJ163 Academic writing and publishing -course, where the emphasis is more on writing an academic paper (e.g. structure of scientific article, argumentation, formalities, handling references and citations, conclusions and discussion).
