Travel connections to Jyväskylä

Jyväskylä is a city located in Central Finland. While Jyväskylä does have an airport, for international travel we recommend booking your flights to Helsinki and taking one of the other means of transportation to Jyväskylä.

Train

To book your train ticket in advance visit VRs (Finnish Railway) page https://www.vr.fi/cs/vr/en/frontpage

Choose Helsinki Airport as departure station and Jyväskylä as arrival station. In case you choose to stay in Helsinki for a few days before travelling to Jyväskylä, please use Helsinki  as your departure destination. Trains to Jyväskylä tend to have at least one transfer in Tampere, possibly two. If you book your train ticket with departure from Helsinki Airport, the first connection is 3 stops to station Tikkurila on the airport train “P”. A train ticket to Jyväskylä costs around 40€.

Please note! The search function doesn’t recognize JYVASKYLA. If you can’t type Ä, just type JYV and chose Jyväskylä from the drop down list.

Bus

Bus is a very convenient way to travel from Helsinki to Jyväskylä because there are several direct connections throughout the day. Bus can also be a very cheap alternative, tickets starting from 1€ for early birds. A regular bus ticket from Helsinki to Jyväskylä is around 10-15 euros.

Busses leave from Kamppi long distance bus station. To get to Kamppi from Helsinki Airport you have to take the airport train (5,50€) , airport bus (5,50€) or Finnair City bus (6,20€). There is an approximately 5-minute walk from the railway station/Finnar bus stop to Kamppi.

Bus tickets from Helsinki to Jyväskylä can be purchased at:

http://www.onnibus.com/en/index.htm (Choose Helsinki (without any brackets) as your departure station, and Jyväskylä as your destination. Typ JYV and pick Jyväskylä from the drop down menu. The search function does not recognize spelling as Jyvaskyla.)

https://www.matkahuolto.fi/en/  From this provider you can also search for bus connections to Jyväskylä directly from Helsinki Airport. However, these connections always include a transfer and the transfer might be at a road side bus stop (it’s stated in the options). If you choose to take a bus directly from the airport, we recommend you to let the driver know that you are transferring to another bus. Practically all bus drivers do speak English and are able to help you to make the right connection.

By Car

It might be convenient for a group of people travelling together to rent a car. For car rentals options from Helsinki Airport please visit https://www.finavia.fi/en/helsinki-airport/services/parking-and-traffic/
