The main research areas at the department are

The analysis research group is part of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Analysis and Dynamics Research for the years 2014-2019 together with the analysis and mathematical physics groups at the University of Helsinki and the University of Oulu.

The inverse problem research group is a member of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems, which is internationally recognized as the world's leading unit in the field. The department shares the status for the years 2012-2017.

Professor Pekka Koskela was nominated as a Academy Professor of the Finnish Academy for a period of 2010-2014.

Professor Nicola Fusco (Naples) was selected by the Finnish Academy to be a FiDiPro professor at the department.
