Dr. M. Sidury Christiansen (Department of Bicultural Bilingual Studies, University of Texas, San Antonio) will visit Jyväskylä in November and she will give two lectures. No pre-registration required. Welcome!

Dr. M. Sidury Christiansen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bicultural Bilingual Studies at UTSA and a former Fulbright Scholar. She specializes in the research and teaching of sociolinguistics and digital literacies among bilinguals and English language learners. Her research explores the intersection between digital literacy and language ideologies, identities, and culture in offline and online social network environments. Her publications have appeared in journals such as Journal of Sociolinguistics, International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, and Written Communication.

  • Thursday, 29 November (12.15-13.45, Room C5, Seminaarinmäki): Lecture on multimodal and digital literacies (open to students + Language Campus colleagues)
    • o Research on digital literacy has investigated L2 learning in multimodal platforms, such as fan fiction writing and participation in social network sites in in-school and in out-of-school contexts. Fewer studies, however, have integrated multimodal projects into academic writing at higher proficiency levels, where many L2 writing teachers still conceptualize language teaching as an abstract system and continue promoting static literacies of paper-based resources in the classroom, challenging the authenticity in L2 learning (Lotherington & Jenson, 2011). Although some have used video technology to present arguments based on the idea that students can make their arguments using rhetorical strategies that are most effective for the screen (Spina-Caza & Booth, 2011), there is little documentation on how multimodal projects specifically affect students’ writing of traditional text-based papers. Therefore, the purpose of this presentation is to introduce multimodal digital assignments  that can empower EFL students to develop the necessary academic writing skills to effectively communicate in digital and non-digital platforms. The presentation will include a synthesis of the existing literature to analyze the implications and limitations of digital tasks in the EFL context, and present three examples of digital and multimodal activities that EFL educators can implement to foster the development of academic writing. 
  • Friday, 30 November (14.00-16.00: Room Lyhty, Seminaarinmäki): Lecture on digital literacies & working life (as part of the Research Afternoon series of the department); including short introduction of the research group ‘Multimodal and digital literacies in working life’
    • o The main purpose of this presentation is to outline and discuss different concepts related to digital literacy in order to understand what it means for everyday, working life. Terms in this discussion include  accessibility, digital divide, and digital citizenship. After outlining and presenting common definitions and the state of each in the American society, I will present examples on how their knowledge and use may impact people’s job opportunities, literacy, access to services, and educational choices. I will finish this discussion with an in-depth overview of what being digital literate means and how we can study the new identity it has created in all of us.
