Are you interested in doctoral studies?

The Faculty of Science provides high-quality post-graduate education and conducts research led by top researchers. Doctoral education involves full-time study, which includes a number of courses and a thesis. Besides acquiring in-depth knowledge of a field of study, you will also cultivate your critical and analytical thinking. Post graduate degrees in the Faculty are Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Licentiate of Philosophy (Ph.Lic). After completing the Master’s Degree, the Doctoral Degree takes four years on full-time basis and completing the Ph.Lic degree takes two years.

In University of Jyväskylä the Graduate School for Doctoral Studies steers the implementation of doctoral training in the faculties. Doctoral schools operate at the faculty level. How to apply

A person who wishes to pursue Doctoral or Licentiate (optional) studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Science must apply for admission. The application period for postgraduate studies usually takes place twice a year October - November and May - June. The exact application periods and more detailed instructions regarding the applications will be announced on the Faculty’s web site.

The applicant should submit the application and attachments by filling in the electronic application form in the faculty web site when the application period opens. In special cases, a candidate can be admitted outside the official application period. Admission gives the student the direct right to complete a doctor’s degree. The application must always include curriculum vitae, a research plan or a motivation letter (depending on the departmental instructions). Before submitting an application, an applicant is advised to contact the researchers or research groups which he/she finds interesting.
