Peer support for doctoral students

There is an informal group in Korppi called “Bio PhD students” aimed at the doctoral students of the department. If you want to join the group (bio.phd.group (at) lists.jyu.fi), please contact Aigi Margus, Sebastiano De Bona or Anne Thonig. These are the regular activities/meetings for all doctoral students at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science:

1. Sauna & Support

These peer support meetings are organized 2-3 times per year and are an excellent way to get to know the other doctoral students at the department and to discuss the challenges, problems and good sides of one’s PhD project. Pizza, games and sauna create a nice and friendly atmosphere. In some meetings we invite guests speakers to discuss matters such as life after a PhD, Science communication.

2. Informal Journal Club

This gives us the opportunity to discuss very broad topics like good practice in science, gender and minority biases and work-life balance...over a beer. We meet every other week on Wednesday at 18:00 in Vihreä Haltiatar (Kauppakatu 13). We are very happy to receive suggestions for paper or other kind of articles from you, so do not hesitate to send us your ideas.

3. Coffee breaks

We have coffee/tea breaks every Thursday after the departmental seminar (around 15:00) in Akvaario/coffee room at the third floor of Ambiotica (Department of Environmental and Biological Science). These regular breaks are organised to encourage social interactions between doctoral students and will also give us the opportunity to get up to date with topics discussed in the steering board of the doctoral program and be involved in decision making.
