Salary development of Doctoral Students employed by the University

Doctoral student’s starting salary is based on the job requirement level 2 (OV02). After 50% of the work required for the PhD degree has been accomplished the demand level will shift to the level 3 (OV03) and after 75% of work has been accomplished to the level 4 (OV04). Link to the salary scales.

Increase to level 3 is based on the mid-term evaluation report from the follow-up committee and the statement from the supervisor. The candidate and the supervisor should take care that the committee states explicitly whether 50% of the work has been accomplished, as reflected to the valid research plan.

  1. Doctoral student submits the mid-term evaluation report by online form
  2. The supervisor submits a brief statement by online form
  3. YPJ supervisor makes the evaluation, fills the form "laitoksen johtajan esitys palkkausperusteista" and sends the form to the HR coordinator (Paula Sarkkinen). The date from which the new salary is valid should be indicated.
  4. The head of the department should approve and sign the form and HR coordinator takes the new payroll information to the SAP system

Once 75% of the work, as reflected to the valid research plan, has been accomplished

  1. The supervisor of the doctoral student sends a written statement by online form. The statement should include a tentative timeline for finishing the PhD. As a rule of thumb, at this stage the PhD defence should take place within the coming 12 months.
  2. YPJ supervisor makes the evaluation, fills the form "laitoksen johtajan esitys palkkausperusteista" and sends the form to the HR coordinator (Paula Sarkkinen). The date from which the new salary is valid should be indicated.
  3. The head of the department should approve and sign the form and HR Coordinator takes the new payroll information to the SAP system

Important points

  • Research plan must be kept up-to date and the follow-up group must meet yearly
  • The student and the supervisor need to be proactive in organizing the mid-term evaluation and provide the 50% and 75% progress statements
  • Follow-up committee members must be kept updated about the changes in research plan and what needs to be stated in the mid-term evaluation report
