Main Group Chemistry Research Group

Over the years, main group chemistry has led to many important discoveries that have affected our understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry and given rise to compounds of practical importance. For example, qualitative bonding models have greatly contributed to our understanding of chemical reactivity, and materials such as semiconductors, ceramics and polymers have found a range of applications in modern technology. The ongoing renewal of main group chemistry ensures that the field will have a profound impact also in the years to come.

Main group chemistry research at the University of Jyväskylä combines elements from inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, and fuses together the departmental focal areas in structural & synthetic chemistry and computational chemistry & spectroscopy. At the faculty level, our research group is affiliated with the Nanoscience Centre, a collaborative research unit focussing on molecular nanoscience. We have also established many national and international collaborations that involve sharing expertise and infrastructure, and thereby further the research objectives of the group.

Undergraduate and Graduate Students, Postdoctoral Fellows and Visiting Scholars interested to join our Main Group Chemistry Research Group are encouraged to contact our staff to discuss available positions and different funding opportunities. Postdoctoral Fellows and Visiting Scholars who can provide their own funding are, in principle, welcomed at all times. We are always keen to sponsor junior academics and other early-career researchers applying personal research grants from funding agencies like the Academy of Finland, the European Research Council or the European Commission.
