Science since 1965

The foundations of the University of Jyväskylä lie in the first Finnish-speaking teacher training college, Jyväskylä Teacher Seminary, established in 1863 by Uno Cygnaeus. Teacher training and forward-looking work in teaching are counted among our strengths, along with sciences, humanities, sports, and health. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science was founded in 1965 and it is the university's oldest and largest faculty. It has four departments located in the Mattilanniemi and  Ylistönrinne campuses. The Mattilanniemi and Ylistönrinne areas have been carefully planned, and they have their own unique features.

The faculty has recently enjoyed continued growth. Our faculty offers intensive and competitive fields of study that are able to fulfil the needs of working life and provide a clear educational path for researchers.
