The Department of Mathematics and StatisticsUniversity of Jyväskylä, is seeking to hire 5-9 postdoctoral researchers in Mathematics and Statistics starting preferably on September 1, 2019. We invite prospective candidates to apply for these positions, which will involve research related to one or more of the following groups:

  1. Geometric analysis research group
  2. ERC project: Geometry of metric groups
  3. Inverse problems research group
  4. Nonlinear partial differential equations research group
  5. Causal models and study design
  6. Computational statistics and simulation methods

The postdoctoral researchers are expected to focus on scientific research, but also to participate in teaching within their own areas of expertise. The amount of teaching duties is rather small. The salary depends on  qualifications and experience, and  will be dictated by the University Administration. Usually, a post doc's monthly salary ranges between € 3370 and € 4100 before taxation.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. Teaching and research staff are required to master the language in which they teach. A good command of English is required and a proficiency to teach in English will be considered beneficial.

We are looking for the most promising researchers who have recently completed their doctoral degree or are about to complete it. A  PhD degree is required by the starting date of the contract. The contract will be made for a fixed term of 1-4 years.

Description of research environment

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a leading unit in mathematical sciences in Finland. The department staff numbers over 80, with 10 professors. The research carried out at the department is of the highest international standard. The department participates in the Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems Research and in the Centre of Excellence in Analysis and Dynamics Research appointed by the Academy of Finland. The department also has two research projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC). The major lines of research are geometric analysis, geometric measure theory, inverse problems, nonlinear partial differential equations, statistics, and stochastics. In 2018 the Shanghai ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects listed Jyväskylä in position 101-150 in Mathematics. For more information, see the webpages of the research groups listed above.
