Exploring nature's mysteries

Physics guides you through time, energy and space. At the University of Jyväskylä, you can familiarise yourself with, for example, nuclear and accelerator-based physics, nano- and material physics, particle physics and cosmology. You will understand the phenomena of the physical nature and know how to apply your knowledge in different fields. You can graduate as a subject teacher of physics, researcher or an expert in, for instance, product development, medicine or computer modeling.

Our department, as well as the faculty, is highly international. All of our research groups operate on an international level and their working language is English. We also offer two Master's degree programmes in English. A Master’s Degree prepares you for doctoral studies and an academic career.

About studies

Studies in physics combine theory with practice. Studies are interactive, and assignments are done in groups and in good cheer. At our department, you can also do an internship in one of the research groups. You can form your degree to your liking by choosing other studies according to your interests. Whether your interests lie in chemistry, information technology or economic sciences, combining studies from different fields is easy! After you have got your Master’s degree, you can continue on to postgraduate studies.

Master’s Degree Programme in Nuclear and Particle Physics

The Faculty of Mathematics and Science offers a Master’s Degree Programme in Nuclear and Particle Physics. The programme gives you advanced training in these exciting fields. The research conducted at the Department on nuclear and particle physics is internationally recognized, as exemplified by the Department's unique research environment Accelerator Laboratory.

Master’s Degree Programme in Nanoscience

Our department is involved in a unique Master’s Degree Programme in Nanoscience. If you are interested in natural sciences in a broader sense and want to be a part of the fascinating development of nanoscience either in academia or industry, the Master’s Degree Programme in Nanoscience may be a way to your future career. In the programme, you gather multidisciplinary know-how in the fields of physics, chemistry, and biology.
