Forms of Study

Theory for courses is presented on lectures. You should actively make notes on lectures. Some lectures have compulsory attendance.

In demonstrations, you will process the theory given at the lectures in sub-assembly. Exercises are usually done at home and the answers are checked at next demonstration. Doing the exercises on computer might be part of some courses. Exercises are important part of learning.

Personal and group guiding sessions

Personal guiding or group guiding can also be part of a study period. In the sessions, you will solve exercises under supervision.

Laboratory works

Almost every subject in the faculty has laboratory courses in the curriculum. In laboratory courses you will be doing exercises independently or in group. In the laboratory courses, you will be using the experimental means of natural sciences in practise, you will get to know the laboratory equipment and how to analyse and report the results.

Field works

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science arranges courses where the teaching takes its place on field. On these courses you will make trips to forests, peatlands and streams to examine the environment and nature, to identify species, to collect samples and to make experiments on field.

Seminars, where you will be practising presenting and reporting the scientific information, are part of the studies. You will be presenting your own work or research in the seminars and will get to know other students work and research.

Distance learning

Some courses are organised as distance courses, meaning you can accomplish them completely or partly independently.
